THE overhaul of Bere Regis Sports Club has moved a huge step closer thanks to a cash injection of almost £85,000.
The award, from Viridor Credits, means the club – a hub for sports and social meetings in the village – can move on to its next refurbishment phase.
Club officials have already seen the social area and bar refurbished – the latest grant means “solid plans” can be made for renovating the building’s ailing changing room area.
The club’s football side currently battles it out in Dorset Division One.
Spokesman Andy Kent said: “We’re so grateful for the Viridor Credits funding – it has been a huge help.
“We still need to raise another £25,000. It’s a pretty big task but we’re very optimistic and we’re exploring other fundraising avenues.
“Hopefully we can reach our target soon – then we can make a start.”
Once all the cash is in place the club will safely remove all the asbestos in the building and refurbish the roof and cladding.
Andy explained: “There will be new changing rooms, new showers – separate ones for each team – with more effective water and heating systems.
“The changing rooms will have disabled access and there will be referee and female referee changing facilities too.
“The new facilities will bring the club up to the next level of Football Association standards. If our football team is promoted from Dorset Division One to the Dorset Senior League, then we’ll be prepared.”
Viridor Credits general manager Lisa Nelson described the refurbishment as a good example of the kind of community project they like to support.
She added: “The finished refurbishment work will vastly improve the facilities for this sports club and will benefit everyone who uses and enjoys them.”
